"Top Star" - FIFA World Cup 1958 Sweden retro soccer ball Overview
In november 1957 FIFA announced all over the world that all producers of balls - companies and/or factories could take part in a competition of which company should have the honour to supply the World Cup- matches with balls. They had to send a ball free from any marks or letters together with an envelope with the name of the producer. 102 balls were sent in to the Organising Committee. On the office of the SvFF at the Rasunda Stadium in Solna, Stockholm, a lawyer, a Notarius Publicus Mr Bengt Steuch registered the balls and envelopes and gave them figures from 1 to 102. On February 8th 1958, 4 persons from FIFA's organising Committee met in the morning at the office and discussed about the balls. After lunch there were 10 balls left and were proved at the pitch of Rasunda Stadium. After another two hours ball No. 55 was selected and signed by Sir Stanley Rous as the ball of World Cup 1958. When the envelope to ball No. 55 was open you could see that the company Sydsvenska Laderoch Remfabriken from Angelholm, Sweden had produced the ball. They sent balls to all matches in the World Cup, every team got 30 balls when they arrived to Sweden, teams which whished could buy extra balls, so did Brasil. Still all balls were FREE from marks and letters. First on Sunday June 29th, the day of final the company could announce the ball, called TOP STAR the World Cup-ball. Ball No. 55 is still left in a monter at Rasunda Stadium, Solna, Stockholm, in the room there the board of the SvFF still has there meetings. The ball from the final can you find at the office of Brasilian FA in Rio, that ball that the Brasilian masseur Mario Americo just took on the pitch after the final from the referee Maurice Guigue from France and run away to the dressing room and hide the ball there. The balls used in WC 1958 were yellow, light brown or white. In matches when it was rainy or a little wet (just in the final game) the white ones were used. Here I am selling the white model from the final.
